.There are three levels to Children’s Forming Faith at Our Lady Star of the Sea. Your child begins at Level 1+ when they are 3, 4 or 5 years old, and progresses at his or her own pace through ALL subsequent levels.
Our Lady Star of the Sea is a Regional Center of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) in the Diocese of Bridgeport. CGS is foundational to Forming Faith at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
In the Atrium, your child begins to fall in love with God and learns to know that God is already in love with them. The crown of Level 1+ is your child’s desire for Communion with Jesus in the Eucharist. Once he or she has received First Holy Communion, your child is ready to move up to Level 2.
Your child’s intellectual curiosity is stirring at the age of reason and we satisfy them with three years of “conventional” catechesis. In a group setting they learn about God and what being Church means..
After completing Level 2, your child is ready to apply what they have learned. The first year of Level 3+ is seminar-style: your child grapples with many of the issues that confront a Catholic in this evermore secularized world. The second year is a practicum of sorts, where your child becomes immersed in Catholic Social Teaching within a safe and supportive environment.
Levels 1 and 3 end with a “+” representing the Sacrament of Initiation received at the end (Eucharist and Confirmation).
Children who have been receiving religious education at a Catholic School and are in 2nd grade enroll in Level 1+ Sacrament Preparation upon invitation in October. Send an email to DRE@OLSS.Church to put your child’s name on the invitation list.
Children who have received religious education at a Catholic School continually (grades 2-5) must register for Level 3+ when they enter the 6th grade.
Parents are asked to help their children enjoy fair winds and smooth sailing throughout the duration of their journey with us by:
- Going to Mass
- Praying together
- Discussing what happened in class each week
- Seeing firsthand what takes place in our classes through required service to the Children’s Forming Faith program.
These and all expectations of the program, including our commitment to you, are outlined in the Forming Faith Parent Guidebook.
These are some ways in which we accompany families of one or more persons in developing a mature faith beyond their adolescence.
We make it easy to attend Mass on the weekends as a family. We invite you to volunteer to serve as a Minister of Hospitality, a Reader, an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or an Altar Server.
We offer opportunities to deepen your understanding of Church Teachings and Scripture throughout the year.
We offer Parish Retreats and Devotions.
There are many ways to serve the ministry of Faith Formation. Let us help you to discern how to best use your gifts to build God's kingdom.
